Report Excerpt

The Search & Information Access Report 2009 looks at... Microsoft and Enterprise Search

"A diagram of SharePoint Search is easily drawn, and will display the main ingredients of any search engine: content sources are crawled, indexed, and stored in an index; then searchers' queries will be passed to the query engine, which in turn will access the index and return results. As with most of the infrastructure vendors, however, reality isn't that simple and Microsoft draws on a sizable number of "generic" modules also seen elsewhere in their product line-up. "

Check out the new home page for noted U.S. higher education institution, Duke University. They've decided to put the search box front and center. That's having faith in your search engine, particularly when indexing dozens of subsites. So what happens when you search for admissions applications? Not very promising. Though the results get better for admissions forms. As Enterprise Search Report readers know, when you decide to live by search, someone needs to think about hit boosting and best bets.
