Report Excerpt

The Search & Information Access Report looks at... Google Appliance

"Even Google's marketing won't go so far as to call their implementation "enterprise-class security," instead favoring to highlight single sign-on (which the Appliance supports quite well). Document-level security is handled late-binding - the result sets are filtered for hits a searcher is allowed to see, which requires the system to fire off separate requests for each hit to see if it may be displayed. This has only one advantage - the authorization will be up-to-date to the second - but, certainly in Google's implementation, several drawbacks. "

Google, Search, and Content Management, circa February

09-Feb-2006   --

A month can't go by without commenting about Google and enterprise search. First, the company keeps coming out with bigger versions of its Google Mini appliance -- the latest capable of indexing 300,000 documents. Enterprise Search Report readers know there are limits to what the appliance can do, but Google keeps investing in the platform. And for what other search product is there a true aftermarket? Meanwhile, Documentum has announced plans to bundle Google Desktop into its content integration service, tacitly acknowledging an important reality: a lot of important content never sees a document management repository. Finally, CMS vendors at the lower end of the market are lining up to integrate with Google's appliance for website search; the latest is Jadu, a UK vendor specializing in the local government space.
