CMS market metrics muddle
29-Nov-2005 --
Every week, someone asks me for market metrics for content management, web content management in particular. What is the size of the market? Who has what marketshare? The unsatisfying answer is that I have no idea. It appears that no one else does, either. I've seen estimates for just the Web CMS marketplace putting it at anywhere from $400m to $8B worldwide. I suspect it's closer to the lower figure than higher, but that's still a wide spread. The chief problem is a lack of boundaries and definitions, as well as a preponderance of private suppliers around the world. Case in point: thousands of small firms manage their web content using Yahoo!'s site builder tool (which is based on the open-source CMS, "PHP-Nuke"). So do we include some slice of Yahoo!'s revenue in marketplace metrics? Well, they don't break it out anyway. For you the technology buyer, this should be a moot point; I urge you to focus on the horses and not the horse race.
