13-Jan-2005Google is coming out with a "mini" version of its increasingly popular search appliance. Google Mini only indexes 50,000 documents, but costs only US$5,000, which includes hardware. It's a smart move, since the lower end of the search market is not well served (except maybe by hosted vendors) right now. Even low-priced search software can be complicated to install and configure. As always, Google will perform better with Web content than other forms of enterprise information (though it continues to work on the latter). Licensees should also carefully inventory their existing content and its growth rate, because going above 50,000 documents means a rude -- or at least costly -- surprise...
