Behind Interwoven's "Solutions" Approach

Seen Interwoven's home page recently? The company has been highlighting packages targeting particular departmental and specialized industry needs. We think this makes a lot of sense for vendors like Interwoven and Vignette that are too small to compete effectively with infrastructure players (e.g. Oracle) but too big and clunky to succeed against niche competitors. When you look deeper, you'll see that most of the solutions packages center on collaborative document management, using Interwoven's rather successful "WorkSite" product. Perhaps because it is a more mature discipline, document management lends itself to vertical applications more readily than web content management today. But the other part of the story is that Worksite is simpler, cheaper, and easier to sell than the company's flagship TeamSite product. So the irony is: like Vignette, Interwoven's strongest offering may no longer be its web content management package...
