The Case for Hierarchy
03-May-2004
A short white paper from directory integration vendor Radiant Logic nicely summarizes the value of hierarchical information (via Phil Windley). Hierarchical structures buy you a lot of free context, which is great for both structured content management and search. The paper's other subtext is that enterprise directory information -- once aggregated across applications into some unified hierarchical format -- is the ideal mixing bowl for enterprise content and data integration more generally. Add this to the blossoming number of vendors suggesting that their tier represents the ideal locale to manage the interdepartmental flow of enterprise information. For most use cases, we would suggest rallying around content rather than people and permissions, but the content integration field remains young and there are a lot of lessons left to be learned...
