Can open-source CMS packages scale? If the newly recast theater portal, Playbill.com, is any indication, the answer is, "Yes, with effort." The new version of Playbill is powered by a load-balanced Apache cluster running Midgard, backed by MySQL and an open-source ad server. Playbill.com gets hit hard by an international audience, typically seeing several hundred thousand unique visitors a day. Such is the flexibility of PHP and Midgard that Playbill was able to incorporate a variety of apps (catalog, actor search, etc.) all under one administrative framework. But as we've said repeatedly, open-source CMS packages are not out-of-the-box, and Midgard is no exception. The new Playbill site spent well over a year in development...
