The Web CMS Report 2009 looks at... File storage limitations

"At the same time, SQL Server is also the source of some limitations. Because everything in SharePoint is stored in SQL, it can place limits on how, what and how much can be stored in SharePoint. For example, there's a 2Gb limit on the largest file size able to be continued to SharePoint. This is due to a size limitation of a BLOB (Binary Large Objects - the way in which SQL stores files like Word documents or Excel workbooks). Further..."
