Report Excerpt

The Web CMS Report 2009 looks at... SharePoint's Developer Ecosystem

"This breadth of participation is helpful and indeed refreshing, inasmuch as it resembles the kind of cooperation you frequently see in mature open source communities. However, unlike many open source communities, there is no formal body to sanction best practices or consistently absorb community-generated code into a central base. And Redmond itself is famously mum on its own plans with respect to new development in MOSS. Therefore, it must be said that as a developer, you are really joining a large (and largely leaderless) group of other experimenters. "

How Vendors Make Our Lists

CMS Watch Product Lists are a service to prospective solutions buyers. We deliberately limit our tallies to a limited set of vendors across specific categories, to help buyers quickly identify a reasonable "long list" of possible solutions to investigate.

What CMS Watch looks for in a software package:

  • Longevity of package in serious distribution
  • Geographic breadth of customer base (typically international)
  • Size, distribution, longevity, and quality of customer base
  • Company focus on real software or hosted service, rather than professional services or spin-off apps
  • Diversity of industry verticals served
  • Size and likely staying power of company
  • Relevant experience of the principals
  • Overall credibility of the solution (to us -- your mileage will vary)

Note that the absence of a package from a list here does not mean the vendor has a substandard offering or is fundamentally too small to consider.

For example, many perfectly capable regional players do not make our lists. To find out more about local vendors in your area or country, you might want to consult with peer organizations. Our lists are intentionally not exhaustive, and your specific requirements should determine your final "short list" of solutions.

For more complete vendor lists, consult the "DMOZ" Open Directory project.

Note to Vendors

Message to vendor applicants: We revise these lists 2 times per year (typically on a Summer/Winter schedule).

Should you wish to have your package considered, please write to info(at)CMSWatch.com, addressing in detail the attributes bulleted above. Please note that we receive several such submissions a week, and therefore can only reply for more information should your package become a finalist for further consideration.

To apply, you should respond in detail to the criteria above and be sure include median product license fees as well as total annual software revenues for your firm. Each list will remain limited in any case, so note that any new entrants must "bump" incumbents.
