Myths about open source software

In a recent talk on open source web content management, Seth Gottlieb listed some myths commonly trotted out by critics of that particular licensing model.

• Open source will cost you more than commercial software
• Open source developers are hobbyists and hackers
• Open source software is not supported
• Companies that can afford commercial software buy it

Seth also balanced his talk with a set of myths espoused by open source zealots:

• Open source software will cost you no money
• Open source makes software better
• Open source = Open standards
• With open source you get a community
