Just how bad is Enterprise Search?

Pretty bad, according to some research from Delphi Group, who found that only 14% of enterprise searchers were "satisfied" or "very satisfied" with search results in their enterprise system. This doesn't mean that the tools all suck. It does mean that you need to set expectations carefully, and, as James Robertson points out, pay close attention to usability...
