It often becomes apparent to buyers that the most complex part of an ECM project is often the capture (imaging) portion. It's something we have written about before at CMS Watch: the fact that many people confuse the scanning hardware with the imaging software.
In fact imaging software is some of the coolest technology out there. Imaging has leaped forward over the past few years and can (on a good day) still evoke a wow factor, when seen in action. The intelligence, complexity and accuracy that a modern day solution from Captiva (EMC), Kofax, ISIS, Abbyy, or Brainware can deliver make this one of the most rewarding, value-add process a business can embark on.
And just to be clear on this: Imaging isn't just about paper, its about capturing anything from forms, faxes, and hand-written notes, to barcodes, and anything in between, Not just capturing them to a flat file, but subsequently extracting intelligence, context and indexing from the content and driving the information through workflows. But in our experience most people have little understanding at all of this important area of technology, some barely know their DPI from their TWAIN's.
In our ECM evaluation service we always take time to look closely at the imaging competencies of all the vendors, but just getting the project team on to the same playing field and level of understanding regarding Imaging can still be a challenge.
Hence we are partnering with our friends at AIIM to deliver a new online education course.
