The XML & Component Content Management Report 2008 looks at... Metadata in Astoria

"The product ships with a default set of attributes (mostly system metadata), which you can extend. (And unlike DocZone, you don't need Astoria to extend it for you.) However, note that any custom attributes do not apply at check-in, the only attributes applied at check-in are approvals, dates, and comments. This is a hassle, because it means that, after checking in a file, you have to remember to return to the browser interface, access a menu function, and apply (or re-apply) any metadata then. "
