The Web CMS Report 2009 looks at... Vignette Content Management

"One area where experienced content engineers will find Vignette lacking is in XML support. With its optional integration tool called "VBIS," you can import and output XML content, but while managing content, Vignette sticks to a straight relational model. Like most other CMS tools, Vignette can represent content as XML, albeit using its own schema (you cannot use arbitrary or industry-standard schemas in the management environment). The problem is not that the product uses a database for storage (most packages do that). Rather, by natively lacking strong notions of hierarchy, the product can work in unexpected ways, such as..."

Why CMS Watch

In the technology world, conflicts of interest abound. Where can a prospective buyer of content technologies turn for truly impartial counsel? CMS Watch was founded in 2001 to provide just such independent advice. We work solely on behalf of the technology buyer, providing vendor-neutral analysis and advice.

Skeptical? Check out our blog, or read what we have to say about the vendors we cover.

Then consider taking a closer look at one of our technology evaluation reports. The advice in our reports can save you time and money, our technical acumen can reduce your risks, and our clear-eyed view of the vendors can help you find the right match for your particular needs.

We also serve as a resource to the community, providing freely-available articles to help you succeed in your content management or search initiative. You can browse our feature articles and blog entries by technology channel, by project phase, by topical area, or by specific vendor.

Our Reports Are Different

CMS Watch is not your typical analyst firm:

  • Our reports are the result of careful research by independent industry veterans with strong technical backgrounds, and are informed by interviews with actual customers.
  • Our reports always begin with a business case analysis that you can use to evaluate your strategic options (and share with your boss). But we are not cheerleaders: these solutions can be complicated to implement, and we remain honest about the real costs and effort required to get them to work.
  • Our reports delve into significant technical detail, not just about the overall fields they cover, but about the specific products we discuss. We get beyond vendor PowerPoint slides and routine Excel checklists to offer useful analysis for architects, developers, and other engineers.
  • At the same time, we simplify complex topics through custom illustrations and screenshots showing the products in action.
  • Our assessments are completely independent. CMS Watch analysts receive no funding from the vendors we cover and have no incentive to favor one over the other. When we see something negative about a product or a vendor, we say it. When a vendor does something well, we write about it, and expect nothing in return.
  • More importantly, CMS Watch never ranks "best" or "magic" vendors. Instead we detail the strengths and weaknesses of the various solutions, then identify their suitability for different types of use cases, while isolating vendor tendencies that may influence longterm product roadmaps.
  • Our reports conclude with a list of pitfalls to avoid when implementing any of these solutions -- gathered from the hard experience of those who have gone before you. We also provide practical product selection roadmaps.
  • Above all, whenever we look at products, or assess the latest buzz phrases, or describe features, we try to put ourselves in your position: the technology buyer.
