The Enterprise Portals Report 2008 looks at... Oracle Portal 10g

"By default, the portal comes with a simple Web search engine called UltraSearch. It's not pretty out of the box and you'll probably want to spend time updating the user interface. UltraSearch can also only search and index public content. In other words, secure content will not be indexed at all."

CMS WATCH REPORT FINDS INDUSTRY CONSOLIDATION HAS NOT REDUCED THE RANKS OF WEB CMS SOFTWARE VENDORS

10th Edition of "The CMS Report" Critically Evaluates 30 Web Content Management Offerings

Silver Spring, MD, USA -- Not a month goes by without an acquisition impacting the content management marketplace. Yet, despite this continued consolidation, the latest semi-annual release of "The CMS Report" finds the web content management space crowded with players, including 30 viable, expanding vendors in both North America and Europe.

Recent content management news has focused on Open Text's acquisition of Hummingbird, and IBM's pending purchase of FileNet. While the impact on those companies' respective document management portfolios remains to be seen, consolidation has not significantly reduced the universe of solid Web CMS product choices, according to the latest edition of The CMS Report.

The Report was released today by CMS Watch (www.cmswatch.com), an independent analyst firm that evaluates content technologies and strategies for prospective solutions buyers.

"Major Web CMS products are not getting taken off the table here," notes CMS Watch founder Tony Byrne. "Buyers still have as dizzying a slate of viable choices as ever."

Based on hundreds of interviews with web content management system (CMS) customers worldwide, the 10th Edition includes detailed comparisons of 30 vendors across 17 key feature categories, as well as evaluations of individual product suitability for 12 universal CMS scenarios.

Other Report findings include:

  • The supplier community remains divided over "Web 2.0" features -- like blogs, wikis, and ratings -- amid uneven customer uptake. Some CMS vendors (e.g., Stellent, Ektron) have added these modules to their products, while others (e.g., Vignette, Interwoven) avoid them entirely or turn to channel partners to build specific applications in the field.
  • The line between web content management systems and enterprise portals is beginning to blur again after the two product segments diverged earlier this decade. With customer demand for greater interactivity, more CMS products are adding portal-like features. And vice-versa: portal vendors are trying to remove the need for a separate investment in CMS products.
  • European vendors continue to expand aggressively in North America. Sitecore, Tridion, and Mediasurface have followed Day and RedDot into a large American market where no single vendor dominates.

Bob Boiko, author of The CMS Bible, commented on the 10th Edition, "CMS Watch reports are an essential resource for the most important information management projects around the world." Boiko continued, "The depth, breadth, authority, and wit of The CMS Report is unmatched in the industry."

The CMS Report provides 8- to 15-page comparative product surveys of 30 web content management offerings as well as information about 12 other packages across 7 product categories. Vendors covered include Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT), EMC|Documentum (NYSE:EMC), Interwoven (NASDAQ:IWOV), FileNet (NASDAQ:FILE), Vignette (NASDAQ:VIGN), Stellent (NASDAQ:STEL), IBM (NYSE:IBM), Open Text (NASDAQ:OTEX), Hummingbird/RedDot (NASDAQ:HUMC), WebSideStory (NASDAQ:WSSI), Day (SWX:DAYN), Mediasurface (LSE:MSR), Serena, Tridion, CoreMedia, Percussion, FatWire, PaperThin, Ektron, CrownPeak, Typo3, and Plone/Zope. The Report is available for purchase online from CMS Watch (http://www.cmswatch.com).

The Report is designed to help enterprises make faster and better buying decisions. Like all CMS Watch offerings, The CMS Report does not rank "best" vendors, but instead details the strengths and weaknesses of the various suppliers, identifies their suitability for different use cases, and isolates vendor tendencies that may influence longterm product roadmaps.
